Viking Oven F3: Controller or Cooling Fan

An F3 is a Viking control saying it cannot verify something it depends on, and what that something is changes with the generation. One gas wall oven family publishes F3 as a controller fault; the later control raises it at the fan.

Two Viking documents print F3, and they give it different meanings.

The gas wall oven service literature calls it a controller malfunction, and the procedure behind that starts at the temperature probe rather than the board. The later electronic control raises F03 against the cooling fan, because it watches that fan’s speed signal and acts when it leaves the band it accepts.

Which one applies is a question the plate answers.

What F3 is raised against, by control generation
Which controlWhat it is raised againstWhat it is not
Gas wall oven, knob and timer The controller, once the probe has been measured and cleared. Not the bake burner or the igniter.
Later electronic control The cooling fan, whose speed signal is no longer arriving. Not the convection fan behind the rear cover.
Either generation Something unconfirmed, rather than something measured as broken. Not a reason to rerun the cycle and hope.

Follow-ups

Can I keep using the oven with F3 showing?

Better not to. The control is reporting that it cannot confirm something, which is when running the cycle anyway stops being informative. Switch it off, note what the panel does next time, and ring Viking Pro Repair Denver on (720) 790-9436.

Is the cooling fan the same as the convection fan?

No. The convection fan moves air around the food; the cooling fan protects the electronics and the door lock through a hot cycle. Only one of them has a speed signal the board listens to. Viking Pro Repair Denver tells them apart on (720) 790-9436.

Does F3 always mean a part has failed?

Not always. It means the control could not confirm something, and a loose connection produces that as surely as a dead component does. Which is why the wiring gets checked before anything is ordered. Viking Pro Repair Denver works that order on (720) 790-9436.

Book it

A code that comes back inside a cycle is a fault, not a glitch.

The van runs 8 am until 8 pm, seven days a week; the phone is picked up 24/7. Your $89 pays for the journey and the diagnosis, then comes straight back off the bill when you approve the repair.
