Range Repair
Ignition, simmer control and altitude-related burner faults on Viking professional ranges.
What people describe when they call
- A burner that ticks away for a minute before anything lights
- Lazy orange flame where there ought to be a tight blue cone
- The low setting will not hold and the flame goes out on its own
- One end of the griddle plate scorches while the other stays cool
How the fault gets found
A professional rangetop is mostly gas and metal: an orifice, a venturi, a spark electrode and a burner cap. Nearly everything that goes wrong at the burner is one of those four, and three of them are cleaning or adjustment rather than parts.
Altitude is the part nobody mentions on delivery day. The higher you are, the less gas a burner needs for the same flame, and Denver is a mile up. A rangetop still jetted for sea level burns tall and orange, sooties the grates and will not hold a simmer no matter how carefully you set the knob.
- Manifold pressure at the regulator, read against the rating plate
- Orifice size on every burner, and whether an altitude set was ever fitted
- Spark electrode and igniter cap for cracks, soot and moisture
- Air shutter position and blocked ports across the burner head
What it costs
What the work comes to, before you agree to it
One flat $89 buys the visit and the whole diagnosis, and that $89 comes off the repair the moment you say go ahead.
The lines below are ranges, because a firm figure needs someone standing at the machine with the panel off. What you are quoted is a single number for your fault, said out loud and agreed before any work starts — with the $89 service call already credited against it once you approve the repair.
The repair Usually
- Igniter or burner assembly
- $170–$430
- Oven thermostat or heating element
- $210–$460
- Refrigeration fan or defrost system
- $280–$670
- Dishwasher pump or control
- $200–$430
- Control board or touch panel
- $460–$670
- Compressor or sealed-system repair
- $1,380–$3,260
For scale rather than pressure: $7,540–$15,870 is the current spread for a comparable Viking replacement, before installation. Most calls settle in the first four lines above, and on the rare occasion a reading says the machine is not worth spending money on, you hear that in the kitchen and the service call is all you owe.

What the visit was actually like
4.9/ 51,040 reviews
Front burner ticked away for a minute before catching, every single time. It was a cracked igniter cap, not the spark module we had been told to replace. Lights straight away now.
Orson B.Sloan's Lake
Griddle heated along the back and stayed cool at the front. One element leg had gone open, which he measured in front of me. Part swapped, then he cooked a pancake on it to be sure.

Two burners kept dropping out under a full pot in the galley kitchen of our 1890s Victorian. A soaked spark electrode and one worn burner cap. Properly fixed; the star is for the wait on parts.
